California is usually the most expensive state in the country to buy diesel in, and it carries equipment rules that no other state has. Both belong in the rate before you accept a load into it.
Diesel & fuel tax
California has its own published EIA diesel series, separate from the wider West Coast figure, because prices there behave differently. Our tools use the regional figure for your pickup and print which one it used.
Diesel is taxed per gallon by the state, and as an interstate carrier you settle it through your quarterly IFTA return rather than at the pump alone. Rates are republished every quarter, so use the current official IFTA rate table for the quarter you are filing instead of any figure quoted on a website.
Because California diesel typically prices above the national average, a rate that clears in the Midwest can fail on the same miles here. Score the load with the California price, not a remembered one.
Tolls
Tolling is concentrated on bridges — the Bay Area crossings among them — and on a small number of express facilities, rather than long toll highways.
Bridge tolls for commercial vehicles are charged by axle count, so check the crossing before routing a delivery through it.
Operating cost
California has state-specific equipment and emissions requirements for trucks operating in-state. Confirm your unit's status with the state agency directly before taking freight in — this is a compliance question, not a rate question.
Port and metro drayage work brings queue time that is not paid unless the confirmation says so. Get detention terms in writing.
