Ask this question in any driver group and you will get thirty answers, all of them confident and none of them useful to you. The reason is simple: a good rate is a relationship between a number the market sets and a number only you know.
Start with the number you control. If your total cost per mile is, for example, $1.70 across all miles, then $1.70 is the rate at which you worked for nothing. Everything you want — the truck fund, the tax money, your actual pay if it is not already in the cost — has to come out of the gap above it.
Now decide what that gap has to be. A common way to frame it: pick the weekly net you need, divide by the miles you can realistically run in a week, and add that to your cost per mile. That sum is your personal floor. Not a market opinion — arithmetic.
Then the market half. Rate ranges move by lane, equipment, season and week, and anyone who quotes you a fixed national number is guessing. The two halves meet like this: your floor tells you what you can accept; the lane range tells you what you can ask. When the range sits above your floor, you negotiate toward the benchmark. When the range sits below your floor, the honest answer is that the lane is not yours this week.
One more thing that trips people up. Quote rates are loaded-mile rates; your floor is a total-mile figure. Always convert before comparing — divide the whole check by loaded plus empty miles. Plenty of loads that clear on loaded miles do not clear on total miles.
So the real answer to 'what is a good rate per mile' is a question: good compared to what? Once you can answer that with your own number, the argument stops being an opinion and becomes a decision.
